However I found playing Japanese games on the PC or in the case of console games, emulating my PS2 on PC was useful for some visual novel type games. If there are words I don't understand, the dictionary is just an Alt-Tab away. Also there is AGTH + ATLAS which automatically translates text from visual novels.
